Volunteer with us - (it's easier than you may think!)
Volunteering for SIFI can mean so many things - it can be something as simple as giving someone a ride to the vet who doesn't have a car, acting as an extra pair of hands for trapping or recovery in a large-scale trapping project, or it can mean helping another first time-trapper get started after you've done your own colony/project and have some experience under your belt and confidence in your favor. It can even mean delivering food, shelters, and/or straw to elderly or disabled caretakers on the island who might not otherwise be able to get their hands on those supplies needed to properly care for their colonies. If you would like to be added to the mailing list for these kind of requests, just let us know! There's never any pressure - we're thankful for whatever people can do - and we realize that's different for everyone. As a general rule, we do ask that all volunteers over 18 years of age be TNR-certified. This means that they have completed a Trap-Neuter-Return training workshop. These classes are offered regularly right on SI, as well as in the other boroughs of NYC and available online through the Humane Society of the US. Volunteers under 18 years of age must have both attended the workshop and have the written permission of a parent or guardian to participate in SIFI activities. Volunteers under 18 years of age will, at all times, be accompanied by a TNR-certified individual while participating in said activities.
