Come learn how to improve the lives of the cats AND the humans in your neighborhood.
SIFI does not provide trapping services, but we DO provide all the resources you need to improve the situation in your neighborhood!
The cats...
Feral cats, by definition, are cats that are not socialized to human beings.

For those working with free-roaming cats in their communities.
It begins with YOUR attendance at a TNR-training workshop. Authored by Neighborhood Cats (NY's foremost experts on feral cats)...
Feral cats are often a sticky subject in many municipalities - particularly those like NYC, wherein ferals exist in something of a legal "no man's land."

Did you know that 40% of Americans have fed a street cat? So you're not alone. BUT if you are feeding...
If you suspect that one of the cats in your neighborhood is pregnant and/or just gave birth, you have several options.
Studies show that removing cats won't benefit wildlife in the area...in fact, often the opposite.
Volunteer with us - (it's easier than you may think!)
Volunteering for SIFI can mean so many things - it can be something as simple as giving someone a ride to the vet who doesn't have a car, acting as an extra pair of hands for trapping or recovery in a large-scale trapping project, or it can mean helping another first time-trapper get started after you've done your own colony/project and have some experience under your belt and confidence in your favor. It can even mean delivering food, shelters, and/or straw to elderly or disabled caretakers on the island who might not otherwise be able to get their hands on those supplies needed to properly care for their colonies. If you would like to be added to the mailing list for these kind of requests, just let us know! There's never any pressure - we're thankful for whatever people can do - and we realize that's different for everyone. As a general rule, we do ask that all volunteers over 18 years of age be TNR-certified. This means that they have completed a Trap-Neuter-Return training workshop. These classes are offered regularly right on SI, as well as in the other boroughs of NYC and available online through the Humane Society of the US. Volunteers under 18 years of age must have both attended the workshop and have the written permission of a parent or guardian to participate in SIFI activities. Volunteers under 18 years of age will, at all times, be accompanied by a TNR-certified individual while participating in said activities.
